Not That Frequently Asked Questions
What will I do if I don't get elected to an office?
If you are
not elected to an office, you may be appointed to a government agency or
position (Department of Transportation, law enforcement, Supreme Court,
etc.). It is in your interest to pursue an office. It will occupy a
large portion of your time during the session. On the other hand, you
may wish to pursue an opportunity to participate in the lobby
activities. Your city counselor will assist you in that part of the HBS
Program.
If
I am a precinct committeeman, may I run for an elected office?
Yes.
However, you may not run for more than one (1) office appearing on the
ballot.
Must a city chairman or county chairman be a precinct committeeman?
No. In
most Boys State political situations, however, a city or county chairman
usually starts out as a precinct committeeman. And, it is a very good
idea for them to be delegates to their party's state convention.
How
is a city or county chairman selected?
The
precinct committeemen from each political party conduct a caucus for the
purpose of selecting the city chairman or county chairman.
If
a city chairman or county chairman moves up to a higher political office
at Boys State, does someone fill the vacancy created?
Yes.
There will be a city vice-chairman and a county vice-chairman selected
also by the precinct committeemen. The vice-chairman would fill the
vacancy.
To
whom do I give my petition when I file to run for a city or county
office?
If you are
filing to run for a city elected office, you will give your petition to
your political party's city chairman. If you are running for a county
elected office, you will give your petition to the county chairman for
your party.
How
will I obtain a petition to file as a candidate for the primary
election?
Your city
counselor or assistant dean will furnish petition forms to you.
Must the chairman of the state central committee be a county chairman in
order to be selected?
Although
the technical answer may be no, as a practical matter only the county
chair people will likely be selected as the chairman of the state
central committee. The state chairman "can" be anyone from the same
political party.
If
I am selected as a delegate to the state convention, does that mean I
cannot run for any of the state offices?
Absolutely
not! A delegate to the state convention is a political position. Being
elected to a state office is a separate issue--a position in the
government itself not just the political party. A delegate may seek the
nomination for any state office desired.
Can
I be a city or county election board member and still be a delegate to
the state convention?
No. At
HBS, an election board member CANNOT be a delegate to or an official of
his party's state convention because both activities are functioning at
the same time. Also, NO ONE may serve on two election boards.
